Cheers to 63 years! One of my childhood favorites was released on this day back in 1955. From the iconic Siamese cats to the romantic spaghetti date scene, Lady and the Tramp will always hold a place in my heart.
When I saw that this anniversary was coming up, I knew I had to put together a little Disneybound inspired by my favorite character from the film — Lady! (You can check out my other Disneybounds here.)
Pidge, Lassie, Miss Lady…no matter what you call her this sweet little Cocker Spaniel is an icon. Jim Dear knew just what he was doing when he picked Lady out for his Christmas present to Darling!
Did you know that Lady was actually based on a real dog? Walt Disney encouraged one of his animators, Joe Grant, to do a full story board featuring Grant’s pup after seeing the sketches he did of his English Springer Spaniel! Much like Lady, his dog (also named Lady) was also dealing with the challenge of a new baby in the house.
From the songs to the characters, I couldn’t get enough of this movie as a child and knowing that Walt was behind the creation of it may explain why! He just had a way about him when it came to creating films.
I love that one of my favorite scenes (Lady being opened on Christmas) was inspired by a similar experience that Walt had surprising his wife with their pup Sunnee!
The setting for the movie was also inspired by his hometown, Marceline, Missouri — the inspiration for Main Street U.S.A. in Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and other Magic Kingdom-style Disney Parks around the globe. (Classic Walt move.) How perfect was it that Disneyland was to open less than a month after Lady and the Tramp premiered?!
Looking back on Disney film anniversaries has become a new hobby of mine! It takes me back to those VHS movie marathon days that made me into the Disney lover I am today. (It also gives me an excuse to update my Disney collection!)
After 63 years I’d say that Disney enjoyed looking back on this movie too because earlier this month on June 8th they released three Dooney & Bourke designs inspired by the film!
I swear, every new Dooney & Bourke design that Disney releases I just want to add to my collection! This Lady and the Tramp one is no exception!
