Where The Wild Things Are

“Welcome to a kingdom of animals… real, ancient and imagined: a kingdom ruled by lions, dinosaurs and dragons; a kingdom of balance, harmony and survival; a kingdom we enter to share in the wonder, gaze at the beauty, thrill at the drama, and learn.”

Michael D. Eisner, April 22, 1998

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is one of those experiences that I think we start to appreciate more with age. As a kid, it was my least favorite park — always choosing others over it for the thrill attractions and movie-inspired moments. (In my defense, the park was far less developed than it is today!) And here I am at 25 finding myself spending far more time in this park than I ever expected to.

It’s truly amazing to realize that this unique theme park turned twenty back in April of this year! It really puts into perspective how much time really does fly. From its initial plans of for a mythical Beastly Kingdom to the reality of a far off world that is Pandora, this park has always been ambitious in nature! (Get it? — Nature!)

All jokes aside, Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a pretty spectacular place if you just take the time to step back and take it all in. Attractions like Kilimanjaro Safaris stem from Walt’s original idea for the Jungle Cruise — to include REAL animals on the attraction! How cool is that?! His original idea was still able to come to life decades later. (Kilimanjaro Safaris Pro Tip: Ride it at night! A lot of the animals that are normally snoozing during the day come alive after dark.)

Every piece of plant and animal life in this 580 acre park is worth taking a second look. Take the Tree of Life for example, this “tree” has over 8000 branches with over 102,000 leaves! (I say “tree” because the base is actually engineered from a refitted oil platform.) The Tree of Life features over 325 animals that are carved throughout! How many have you been able to spot? This park icon is also home to my least favorite attraction, It’s Tough To Be A Bug.

Like all of Walt’s theme parks, Disney’s Animal Kingdom will only continue to get more beautiful with age. So next time you visit Walt Disney World’s youngest theme park, be sure to make a little extra time for some exploring! (And pay the Disco Yeti a visit of course!)
