Even More Earth Month Updates at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Earth Day, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park’s Anniversary, is still a little over a week away, but the Earth Month & Earth Day excitement is still in full swing. You may remember my first article about Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s Earth Month celebrations, but I’m here to share even more that you can look forward to if you’re visiting.

From completed sand sculptures to new life and delicious park sips and eats, there’s quite a bit to cover as we lead up to Earth Day on April 22, 2021.

‘Secrets of the Whales’ Sand Sculpture

Last month we found out that Disney’s Animal Kingdom would feature a carved sculpture created from 40 tons of sand to celebrate the release of the Disney+ Original Series “Secrets of the Whales” from National Geographic. Artists began sculpting this masterpiece on April 2, 2021, and it’s finally completed for guests to view! It took over sixteen hours for two artists to complete this sand sculpture. Inspired by the new Disney+ series, this sculpture features a humpback whale, narwhal, and sperm whale.

Check out the video of them creating it below.

“Secrets of the Whales” is a four-episode series, narrated by Sigourney Weaver, executive produced by James Cameron, and featuring Brian Skerry, a National Geographic Photographer and Explorer. The series focuses on five different whale species — belugas, humpbacks, narwhals, orcas, and sperm whales. It was filmed in 24 locations over three years, and it premieres on Disney+ on Earth Day!

This sand sculpture will be on display at the Discovery Island Stage through April 30, 2021, as part of the Earth Month celebration at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park.

Baby Mandrill Arrival

On Saturday, April 10, 2021, a baby mandrill was born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park. There couldn’t have been a more perfect time consider it’s Earth Month! This baby girl mandrill was born to first-time mom Hazel and dad Linus. She was named Ivy by the Cast Members and is fitting in perfectly with the rest of her family — Hazel, Olive, Scarlett, and Snow. If you think this species looks familiar, it’s because you’re thinking of Rafiki from The Lion King!

Guests have already started spotting Ivy and her mom Hazel bonding on Kilimanjaro Safaris, so if you have a trip planned be sure to keep your eyes peeled. While on safari, be on the lookout for Ranger the white rhino, and the new Nigerian dwarf goats, too!

Attraction Anniversary

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park celebrates its 23rd anniversary on April 22, 2021, but did you know there was another peak milestone for an attraction within the park last week? Expedition Everest turned 15 on April 7, 2021, and I shared fifteen facts you need to know about this attraction on its anniversary. This is one of my favorite Walt Disney World attractions, so I was pumped to highlight its 15th anniversary for those who love the attraction as much as I do. You can check out that post here!

We’re still a little over a week away from Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s 23rd Anniversary, (and Earth Day, of course) but if I had to guess I’m sure there are still some surprises waiting for us next week from Disney Park Blog. For now, keep these exciting Earth Month experiences in mind if you’re visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom between now and April 30, 2021!
