Caramel Apple Sugar Skulls | Inspired By Disney + Pixar’s Coco
Thanksgiving is almost here and that means another great Disney and Pixar film is about to hit theaters! For as long as I can remember Disney and Pixar always plan big releases for the week of Thanksgiving so I’m excited to see their latest film. Coco will join the league of Thanksgiving film releases along with Disney movie legends like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Toy Story, A Bugs Life, Frozen, and Moana! (You know, just to name a few.) We’re planning to see it on Wednesday and according to what I’ve read online from those who went to the premiere, it’s supposed to be pretty great!
In honor of Coco‘s big release next week, I decided to try and make some sugar skull inspired caramel apples. Disneyland was offering these this year for Halloween and I thought it would be fun to try and make some of my own! (Also Nick loves caramel apples so he was all about it.)
- Six Large Granny Smith Apples
- Parchment Paper
- Sandwich Size Ziploc Bags
- Two Pounds of White Chocolate Candy Wafers
- One Bottle of Black Cookie Icing
- Assorted Food Coloring
- One Bag of Marshmallows
- One 14 Ounce Container of Vanilla Icing
- Two 11 Ounce Bags of Caramel Bits
- Four Tablespoons of Water
- One Pack of 3/16 Inch Wooden Round Dowels
- One Pack of Flower Cupcake Decorations (Optional)
- Wash all apples and remove any stickers or stems.
- Be sure to dry the apples off completely.
- Stick your wooden skewers into the stem end of the apple.
- Make sure to push the skewers in securely so they hold up through all of the dipping.
- Pour the two bags of caramel bits into a microwave safe bowl.
- Add four tablespoons of water to the caramel bits and put the bowl in the microwave.
- Run the microwave for two minutes on high and stir the mixture until it's completely melted.
- Take your apple and dip it into the melted caramel.
- To help cover the entire apple, use a spoon to pour caramel over the top of the apple.
- As you start to cover your apple it may seem that the layer is uneven, but don't worry! The caramel coat will smooth out as it dries.
- Place your finished apples on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
- Grab your marshmallows and use a knife to cut off a part of one of the ends of it horizontally. This will create a sticky surface to help attach to the caramel apple.
- Add two marshmallows to each apple, creating their own mouse ears!
- Place your tray of apples in the fridge for 30 minute to allow the caramel to harden.
- While your caramel apples are hardening, pour two pounds of white chocolate candy wafers into a microwavable bowl.
- Put the bowl in the microwave for one minute at half power.
- Remove the bowl and begin stirring the wafers.
- Continue putting the bowl in the microwave for thirty seconds and half power until the mixture is completely melted.
- Place to the side and you're ready to dip.
- Take your finished caramel apples and dip them into the melted white chocolate one at a time.
- Use a spoon to cover the apple completely, including the marshmallow ears.
- Place the finished apples on a baking sheet with a new piece of parchment paper.
- Put your baking sheet in the fridge for 15 minutes to allow the white chocolate to harden.
- Scoop two spoonfuls of vanilla icing into four individual small bowls.
- Choose which colors you would like to decorate with and pour each color's drops into their own bowls of icing.
- If you're planning to use bright and vibrant colors like from the movie Coco, I suggest buying the neon color pack of food coloring.
- Use a spoon for each bowl until the icing and coloring is mixed to create vibrant icing colors for decorating.
- Add each icing color to its own Ziploc bag and cut a small hole on one corner so you're ready to create.
- Last, you'll want to place your bottle of black cookie icing into the microwave for fifteen seconds to set it for decorating as well.
- Use the black cookie icing to draw two eyes, a nose, and a big smile on each caramel apple.
- As you draw the faces, place them back in the fridge for twenty more minutes to allow the icing to dry before you add decorations.
- Once the black cookie icing as dried, use your bags of colored icing to decorate your sugar skull caramel apples as you please!
- If you're looking for more texture, add flower cupcake decorations to your sugar skull by using a dab of icing as glue.
- Place your finished apples into the fridge and allow ten to fifteen minutes for them to dry.
- Once you're ready to eat, pull them out of the fridge and enjoy!
Although this was a more time consuming recipe than I normally do, I found it to be very fun! I have always admired the beautiful caramel apple choices that the Disney parks offer year round so I loved having a chance to try and make some myself. This sweet little treat has me all excited for Wednesday! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ve never met a Pixar movie I didn’t like so I’m hoping this won’t be an exception! I’m ready to see Coco and find out what all the buzz is about.
I don’t know about y’all, but I’m living for the vibrant colors from this upcoming film! I’ve been loving the merchandise that has been coming out for it so here are a few of my favorites! This Alex and Ani bangle is a need for me. I also love that Kohl’s has a line of cute Coco inspired pieces! (And several are on sale!) Anyone who knows me knows that I love Tsum Tsums so I included a few below, but if you want the full Coco set you can get it here! Be sure to let me know what pieces from this new Coco collection you’re loving.
Are you planning to go see Coco over the Thanksgiving holidays?
