Make it Pink, Make it Blue: Princess Pupcakes
One year ago today, a little princess puppy was born. Happy First Birthday, Roux! This first year has really flown by. If someone would’ve told me a year ago that I would be making pupcakes for my dog, I wouldn’t have believed them. Yet here we are! One year later with the puppy of our dreams.
Since this is Roux’s first birthday, we decided to give her the royal treatment! She’s basically a Disney princess, so we went with a Sleeping Beauty theme. Why Sleeping Beauty? Her birthday falls ten days before Disneyland’s anniversary where you can find Sleeping Beauty‘s Castle! We’re all about the Disney connections in this family.
When Roux’s birthday got closer, I started looking for birthday cake recipes for dogs. Her favorite foods are apples, peanut butter, and carrots so I wanted to find a way to incorporate these into her pupcakes! I found my inspiration from a recipe by Sugar & Soul and added a few magical twists of my own. If you’re looking to treat your furbaby for their birthday, I highly suggest this homemade recipe!
- 1 Cup of Whole Wheat Flour
- 1 ½ Teaspoons of Baking Powder
- 2 Large Eggs
- 6 Ounces of Plain Greek Yogurt
- â…“ Cup of Unsweetened Applesauce
- â…“ Cup of Creamy Peanut Butter
- 1 Cup of Grated Apple (Peeled & Cored)
- ½ Cup of Grated Baby Carrots
- 2 Tablespoons of Honey
- 1 Cup of Heavy Whipping Cream
- 12 Mini Dog Biscuits
- Red and Blue Water or Oil Based Food Coloring (Optional)
- Preheat the oven to 350° Fahrenheit.
- Line cupcake pans with liners and put to the side.
- In a large bowl, use a mixer to beat together the flour, baking powder, eggs, yogurt, and applesauce.
- Once this mixture is combined, add the peanut butter, honey, carrots, and apple.
- Pour pupcake batter evenly into each cupcake liner and bake for 20-25 minutes. Continue to cook the pupcakes until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the center.
- Once the pupcakes have cooled, blend the heavy whipping cream until it forms a light and fluffy whipped cream topping. (About 3-4 minutes)
- Split the topping into two containers and add desired food coloring colors. (A dab of red to Make it Pink, and a dab of blue to Make it Blue!)
- Pipe whipped cream onto the cooled pupcakes and top with a mini dog biscuit.
Although I chose to go the Make it Pink, Make it Blue theme, what I love about this recipe is that you can customize it to fit your pup! Boy pups could have Peter Pan or Pluto pupcakes, while girl pups may prefer Punzie or Tiana.
Since we first met Roux in August 2016, our rule as puppy parents has been to make the most out of every experience with our little puppy girl. “They might be only a part of your life, but to them you’re their whole life.” This is such a true statement, so we try to treat every milestone for Roux as a big deal!
If you have a fur baby in your life, I highly suggest going the extra mile and making them a healthy, homemade dessert. It’s Roux approved, so you know it’s gotta be good!
How would you celebrate your fur baby’s big day?

July 8, 2017 at 10:00 pmThis post makes me so happy. I’m unable to have a pet where I live right now, but the moment I move into my own place I will be getting a puppy and/or kitty and they’re going to be treated like royalty! I adore animals with all of my heart, and I love it when people treat their pets as part of the family. Making pup-friendly treats is such an adorable idea, I wish I was this creative!
