The Most Beloved Pixar Movie in Each State | 2019

As a 90’s kid, Pixar films played a huge role in my childhood. From the timeless Toy Story trilogy to UP and Finding Nemo, all 21 films so far have made me laugh, cry, and continue to sing the praises of this innovative company. Just last month Pixar released the fourth (and final?Toy Story film, and this movie was truly a testament to how far this company’s computer animation skills have evolved over the past 24 years! I mean seriously, look how amazing Billy, Goat, and Gruff look in Toy Story 4 compared to their original appearance in Toy Story back in 1995.

In honor of Pixar’s 21st film release this summer, cabletv.com decided to toy around with Google Trends to determine the most popular Pixar movie in each state! (Curious which Pixar film was your state’s favorite last year? Click here!) I always have so much fun looking at these creative maps that cabletv.com puts together. What are some of the trends on this map that I’ve noticed?

UpUp, and Away

Right off the bat it’s very apparent that Up has made a mark on quite a few states! In fact, it was determined that Up is the favorite Pixar film in 17 states. Considering Up was only top Dug in a few states last year, the 750% popularity increase in this film in 2019 is worth mentioning!

Here’s Every State That Up Ranked #1 In:

  • Alabama
  • District of Columbia
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin

Pixar’s Princess

The year 2019 brought a big jump in popularity for Merida and her 2012 film Brave as well. Back in 2018 Brave‘s only representation on the map was as a seven-way tie for the state of Utah! This year Pixar’s princess holds her own as favorite in eight United States. I guess you could say Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Washington have a thing for this red headed princess!

In Their Feelings

Five states were feeling the love for Inside Out this year. Indiana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oregon, and Utah are all big fans of Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger and Fear! In 2018 this film was only favorite in two states, so it’s interesting to track the changes in popularity each year like this.

Toys Are Back In Town

With the excitement of the fourth Toy Story film premiering this summer, it’s no surprise that all three of the Toy Story films claim a top spot in the United States! The original from 1995 is Florida’s favorite, which probably has something to do with the excitement of the all-new Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. Toy Story 2 is #1 in Idaho, and Toy Story 3 is favorite for Connecticut, Delaware, and Nevada! Toy Story 4 has had such amazing feedback this summer, so I’m curious to see where it ranks next year.

Film(s) For Thought

Quite a few films were considered one-state wonders this year including A Bug’s Life in Louisiana, Cars 2 in Arkansas, Cars 3 in Kentucky, Finding Nemo in Hawaii, The Good Dinosaur in Wyoming, and WALL-E in Alaska. The only state in this group that stood by their 2018 Pixar favorite was Hawaii!

While these six films made their mark in at least one state, four of Pixar’s films were simply no where to be found on the map this year. The Incredibles 2Cars, Monster’s University, and Coco all missed the mark for most beloved Pixar films in the United States. Considering three out of four of these films (last year’s map was created before The Incredibles 2 premiered in theaters) were claimed in the United States last year, this seems like a far fall! In fact, Monsters University dropped from six to zero over the past year.

Over the past 24 years Pixar has introduced us to over 20 phenomenal films, and I have a feeling this is only the beginning. I’m excited to see what’s in store for Pixar in 2020 and beyond! As special shout out to cabletv.com for putting together this fun map of America. If you still haven’t had a chance to peep your state’s favorite from last year, click here!
