Small World Style
There is just one moon and one golden sun.
And a smile means friendship to everyone.
Have you ever wished that you would’ve been around for a big event that happened in the past? If you could go back in time to experience it, you would in a heart beat! I have the same place in mind every time — The 1964 New York World’s Fair. So why would I be so interested in this event that’s almost 30 years older than I am?
The 1964 New York World’s Fair had quite a bit of Disney influence with WED Enterprises being involved with several sponsors of the fair on their displays. The idea of experiencing some of my favorite Disney attractions in their original state (not to mention the potential of meeting Walt Disney himself) just excites the wannabe Disney Historian in me!
One major attraction from the 1964 New York World’s Fair that Disney was a part of was It’s A Small World. The ride was presented by Pepsi-Cola as a Salute to UNICEF and the World’s Children. Walt was very involved with this project and I think that’s why — despite how most people feel about it — this attraction will always be iconic to me.
The iconic song was written by the Sherman Brothers, the amazing duo who brought us the music from Mary Poppins as well as one of my favorite songs “There’s A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” from the Carousel of Progress. Did you know the song was originally written as a ballad? Walt later wanted a more upbeat tempo for the song on the ride.
Once the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair had come to an end, It’s A Small World made it’s way over to Disneyland in Anaheim, California and the rest is history! This version of It’s A Small World is still open at Disneyland and has since added some enhancements like 29 Disney characters in their native countries — how cool is that? I’ve still never had a chance to ride the original It’s A Small World in Disneyland, but it’s a the top of my list the next time I’m in Anaheim!
For an attraction that started out as an exhibit for a World’s Fair to become a world renowned Disney icon that is featured in five Disney parks around the globe, I’d say this ride is something pretty spectacular. Guests around the world can experience different versions of It’s A Small World at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland!
As a kid visiting Walt Disney World every year, I loved riding It’s A Small World every trip. My favorite part of the attraction took place at the very end. I loved reading all of the different goodbyes from around the world. (We were that family that enjoyed the educational aspects of the Disney attractions.)
When Disney released dress designs featuring theming and icons from classic Disney attractions, I was immediately drawn to this Small World dress for this reason! I loved seeing my favorite part of the ride in a beautiful dress pattern. And unlike some of the other dress designs, I thought that this pattern was subtle enough to wear even when I’m not in the parks!
I love that Disney Style is pulling inspiration from some of my favorite attractions and movies. There’s nothing like adding a little magic to my wardrobe!
