Think Orange Thoughts
Little Orange Bird, in the Sunshine Tree.
Won’t you think of something sunny just for me?
Have you ever heard of the Orange Bird? Orange Bird was created in 1970 by Disney as a mascot for the Florida Citrus Commission, who would be sponsoring the Enchanted Tiki Room in Magic Kingdom.
Orange Bird appeared in ad for Florida Oranges as well as in Adventureland in Magic Kingdom. He had his own record and illustrated book, featuring songs by the iconic Sherman Brothers!
He’s a sweet little bird who can’t speak a word. To communicate, he thinks orange thoughts! How cute is that?
Until the end of the 1980’s, Orange Bird could be found in Magic Kingdom’s Adventureland at the Sunshine Tree Terrace. In 1987 the Florida Citrus Commission did not renew their sponsorship and Orange Bird began to fade away.
Like most other Disney icons, this little guy wouldn’t be gone forever! In 2004 Tokyo Disneyland revived the Orange Bird in celebration of their annual Orange Day on April 14. The Orange Bird merchandise was a hit! On April 17, 2012 all was right in Adventureland as the Orange Bird returned to the Sunshine Tree Terrace once again.
Since his return, you can find Orange Bird merchandise throughout the Walt Disney World resort including Disney Style pieces, plushies, pins, and so much more!
Since Walt Disney World is my first and favorite Disney park, the Orange Bird has always held a special place in my heart! When I saw that he was making an appearance at the Flower and Garden festival this year, I had the perfect idea for a Disneybound in the parks.
I think Orange Bird is a great symbol of the initial plans that Disney had in store for his Florida Project. He wanted to focus on sponsorships and advertising opportunities throughout the park to not only fund it but give brands an association with the famous household name. Although the partnership eventually ended, Orange Bird is still a beloved Disney icon almost 50 years later!
This year for the 25th Anniversary of Epcot’s International Flower and Garden Festival, Orange Bird is making a special appearance on lots of the festival merchandise. Which leaves me with only one question: Where’s the Orange Bird topiary?!
